Work for the Lord: Colossians 3:23-24

“Work for the Lord” with all your heart, knowing your efforts matter eternally. Whether you’re scrubbing floors, filing reports, or raising children, God sees your labor. He calls us to serve wholeheartedly, not for human approval but for His glory.

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” — Colossians 3:23-24 (NIV)

Your Labor Has Eternal Value

God doesn’t separate “sacred” and “secular” work. Every task, big or small, honors Him when done with excellence. A janitor’s diligence reflects Christ just as much as a pastor’s sermon.

Paul reminds us that our ultimate boss is Jesus. Earthly rewards fade, but God’s eternal reward never will. Therefore, work with passion, not perfectionism. Give your best, not out of obligation but love.

Transition words like however, therefore, and moreover help us connect ideas. For instance, mundane work feels meaningless unless we see it as worship. Similarly, frustration fades when we remember whom we serve.

Shifting Your Perspective

Complaints drain joy, but gratitude reframes our work. Instead of grumbling about deadlines, thank God for strength to complete them. Rather than resisting chores, see them as acts of service.

Jesus modeled this. He washed feet, healed the sick, and preached tirelessly—all for the Father’s glory. Likewise, we work not for applause but obedience.

Passive voice should be minimal. Instead of “The project was completed by me,” say “I completed the project.” Active voice strengthens clarity and conviction.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What task do I often resent, and how can I reframe it as worship?
  2. How would my work change if I saw Jesus as my supervisor?
  3. Where do I seek approval more—from people or God?

A Prayer for Diligent Hearts

Heavenly Father, thank You for the work You’ve given me. Help me serve with joy, not complaining. Remind me that my labor has eternal purpose. Let my hands reflect Your excellence, and my heart seek only Your approval. May everything I do bring You glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Work for the Lord—not for fleeting praise, but for an everlasting reward.
