A Culture Without Anchors
Scripture Focus:
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”
— Proverbs 9:10 (NIV)
The Death of Common Sense Devotional Thought
It’s been said that common sense isn’t so common anymore — and that’s not just a joke.
We live in a world where truth has become offensive, logic has become “hate speech,” and people measure wisdom by feelings instead of facts. Somewhere along the way, we stopped asking what is true and started asking what is popular.
Common sense used to mean looking both ways before crossing the street — now it means checking who might be offended before you speak the truth. But the Bible doesn’t tell us to walk on eggshells; it tells us to walk in wisdom.
“Solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.” — Hebrews 5:14
Wisdom takes training. It takes truth. And it starts with reverence — the “fear of the Lord.”
1. A Culture Without Anchors
The more we celebrate “progress,” the less progress we seem to make.
When everyone creates their own truth, no one can find it.
When everything becomes acceptable, nothing is sacred.
Isaiah warned,
“Woe to those who call evil good and good evil.” — Isaiah 5:20
Common sense dies when reverence for God dies first.
Without His standard, we drift into confusion — and confusion always leads to collapse.
2. Responsibility Is Wisdom’s Twin
Common sense reminds us that choices have consequences.
But in a world that blames everyone else, responsibility has become radical.
Blame might feel easier, but it never leads to freedom.
Romans 14:12 says,
“Each of us will give an account of ourselves to God.”
When we return to personal responsibility, we return to wisdom. When we stop excusing sin, we start finding peace.
3. Thinking Like Christ
God gave us minds to think, not just hearts to feel.
Faith isn’t a rejection of reason — it’s its highest form.
Jesus said we must love the Lord with all our heart, soul, and mind (Matthew 22:37).
Thinking biblically is not arrogance — it’s obedience.
And in a world that’s lost its mind, obedience is the most radical form of sanity.

Prayer
Father,
Thank You for being the source of all truth. Restore in me the fear of the Lord — not fear of punishment, but awe of Your wisdom. Help me think clearly, speak truth with grace, and live with conviction. Revive common sense in my heart and home, and let my life be an example of sanity grounded in Your Word.
Amen.
