Parable of The Two Debtors

Forgiveness That Transforms

📖 Luke 7:41–43

“He who has been forgiven little loves little.” – Luke 7:47

In the parable of the Two Debtors, Jesus delivers a short yet striking message about forgiveness. He tells of two men: one owes a small sum, the other owes a great amount. Neither can repay their debts, and the lender chooses to cancel both. Then Jesus poses a question: which man will love the lender more?

Obviously, the one with the greater debt will feel deeper gratitude.

Jesus shares this parable during a dinner at the house of Simon the Pharisee. A woman, known for her sinful past, interrupts the meal by kneeling at Jesus’ feet. She weeps, washes His feet with her tears, and pours expensive perfume on them. Simon feels disgusted—not just at the woman, but at Jesus for allowing her to touch Him. In response, Jesus tells this parable, exposing the difference between shallow self-righteousness and genuine repentance.

A Contrast of Hearts

This parable highlights a deep truth: those who recognize their need for forgiveness respond with greater love. The woman knew how broken she was. She didn’t try to hide her past. Instead, she humbled herself and honored Jesus. Her actions expressed her deep awareness of grace.

Simon, in contrast, remained blind to his need. He thought of himself as morally superior. Consequently, he showed little affection toward Jesus. He didn’t offer water for His feet, a kiss of greeting, or oil for His head—customary acts of hospitality in that culture.

Importantly, Jesus never downplays sin. Instead, He shows that all of us are debtors. Whether our sin feels small or overwhelming, none of us can repay what we owe. Only Christ can clear the account.

Let Love Reflect Forgiveness

If you’ve experienced the forgiveness of Christ, your life should reflect it. Love isn’t just a feeling; it’s a response to grace. Those who have been forgiven much will love deeply, serve joyfully, and worship passionately.

So take a moment today to reflect. Have you forgotten how much you’ve been forgiven? Have you slipped into Simon’s shoes—judging others while minimizing your own need for grace?

Thankfully, Jesus still invites us to the table. He welcomes both the woman and the Pharisee, but only one truly receives Him.
