Higher Than Our Ways
“Higher than our ways”—these words from Isaiah 55 invite us to release our limited understanding and trust the God whose wisdom transcends human logic. When life doesn’t make sense, when prayers seem unanswered, and when circumstances defy explanation, these verses remind us that God’s mind operates on a completely different plane than ours.
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:8-9, NIV)
Spoken to Israelites returning from exile, this passage offers profound comfort when God’s plans don’t align with our expectations. Let’s explore what it means to trust a God whose wisdom surpasses ours.
The Gap Between Human and Divine Perspective
Isaiah’s comparison is striking: “As the heavens are higher than the earth.” This isn’t just a difference in degree but in kind. Consider what this means:
- God’s Thoughts Are Unfathomable
- Human wisdom is limited by time, space, and finite understanding.
- God’s wisdom encompasses eternity, sees the end from the beginning (Isaiah 46:10), and weaves all things for good (Romans 8:28).
- God’s Ways Are Unpredictable
- We often expect God to act in obvious, immediate ways.
- He frequently works through silence, delays, and unexpected methods (like using a manger for a throne).
- God’s Purposes Are Unshakable
- Our plans often fail (Proverbs 19:21), but His purposes always prevail.
- Even suffering and waiting have divine meaning beyond what we can grasp.
Why This Truth Brings Comfort, Not Confusion
At first glance, God’s “higher ways” might seem intimidating. But Isaiah 55 actually follows an invitation: “Come, all you who are thirsty” (v. 1). This means:
- We Don’t Have to Figure Everything Out
- Faith isn’t about understanding all of God’s plans but trusting His character.
- Like a child trusting a parent’s decisions, we rest in His goodness.
- We Can Release Our Demand for Explanations
- Job learned this when God reminded him of divine wisdom (Job 38-41).
- Some answers won’t come until eternity (1 Corinthians 13:12).
- We Are Free to Obey Without Full Clarity
- Abraham didn’t know where he was going (Hebrews 11:8) but trusted God’s leading.
- Our call isn’t to comprehend but to follow.
Living with Trust in God’s Higher Ways
How do we practically apply this when life feels confusing?
- Pray with Humility
- Approach God like David: “My heart is not proud, Lord… I do not concern myself with great matters” (Psalm 131:1).
- Study God’s Past Faithfulness
- Remember how He has worked in Scripture and your life. His track record is perfect.
- Embrace Mystery Without Resentment
- Worship when you don’t understand, like the disciples after the crucifixion—before the resurrection made sense.
- Wait Expectantly
- God’s timing is part of His higher ways. Delays aren’t denials.
Reflection Questions – Higher Than Our Ways
- Where are you struggling to accept God’s “higher ways” right now?
- How has God surprised you in the past by working differently than you expected?
- What step can you take today to trust rather than demand understanding?
Prayer
Sovereign God,
Your thoughts are beyond my comprehension,
Yet Your heart is full of love.
Forgive me for insisting You explain Yourself
On my terms, in my timing.
Help me trust that what seems confusing now
Fits perfectly in Your eternal plan.
When I’m tempted to doubt,
Remind me that the heavens
Really are higher than the earth—
And so are Your ways.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
